The Island Man

Island Man (for a Caribbean island man in London who still wakes up the sound of the sea)
by Grace Nichols

Morning
and island man wakes up
to the sound of blue surf
in his head
the steady breaking and wombing
wild seabirds
and fishermen pushing out to sea
the sun surfacing defiantly
from the east
of his small emerald island

He always comes back
groggily groggily
comes back to sands
of a grey metallic soar
to a surge of wheels
to dull North Circular roar
muffling muffling
his crumpled pillow waves
island man heaves himself
another London day

I honestly would best like to wake up in a pool. I chose the pool as my scene because whenever i go swimming i always feel like shutting my eyes and letting the water take me in. It always feels easier to breath for me in the water face up facing the ceiling and of course floating. I adore the feeling because the ceiling is so high up and gives me a lot of breathing space. This is where i would like to wake up in the morning.

  1. Hi Zuhair,

Good job! Wouldn't you be a little afraid to wake up in a pool - the whole drowning thing?

Your background is black and your text is black, too, so your text disappears. If you go in to Edit Post and highlight your text, you can change it to another colour that will show up better.
